In 1964, in the Donetsk Institute of Soviet Trade, in the Faculty of Accounting and Economics the department of computers and economic-mathematical methods has been created. Since then, the Department has come a long way from calculators and tabulators to modern computer systems.
In 1994, in the Faculty of Accounting and Economics the department was renamed to Department of computer technology, and in 2008 was named as  Department of information systems and technology management. The Department provides training for students in the field of information systems and technology business management of trade and services, computer hardware and software for all specialities of the University, in all forms of training and education and skill levels - bachelor, specialist, master.

   The Department of International Economics was organised as the result of the «Curriculum Elaboration on Sustainable Economy» (T-JEP-10030-98) international project implementation within the framework of the TEMPUS/TACIS Programme.

This programme was developed by the European Union for the former Republics of the Soviet Union (with the exception of the Baltic States) with the purpose of interaction and cooperation between universities and other higher educational institutions of these countries and the European Union by exchanging of innovations in educational process.
One of the primary goals of the project was elaboration of the curriculum for the speciality «International Economics» which was based on implementing the ideas of constant economic growth and providing creation and introduction of new methods of training and new courses. The partners of the project were the University College Cork (Ireland), Bradford College (Great Britain), the University of Hull (Great Britain). The received results of the project were highly appreciated by the European experts. Creation in 1997 of the new «International Economics» speciality and the Department of International Economics under leadership of B.G.Shelegeda, Doctor of Science (Economics), Professor (who at that time was the official Ukrainian project leader), became the practical implementation of the project.
Nowadays the Head of the Department is O.B.Chernega, Professor, Doctor of Science (Economics).
The Department of International Economics is a part of the Institute of Economics and Management. It trains specialists of the «International Economics» field of study (Bachelor, Specialist and Master degree programmes ) with such specializations for Master's degree programmes as «Economic Policy of the European Union» and «International Business».
The Department teaching staff are the lecturers who took an active part in the international projects and undertook practical training at the higher educational establishments of the T-JEP project partner-countries (University College Cork, the University of Hull, Bradford College, the University Sofia-Antipolis in France).

Since 2008 Donetsk National University of Economics and Trade has actively cooperated with the Escuela Universitaria Salesiana de Sarria (EUSS, Barcelona, Spain) and the Graduate School of Management in Barcelona (Spain) in the field of awarding joint diplomas.The students' training is conducted in Ukraine and Spain.
Since 2009 the Department has organised the international trainings in terms of getting new knowledge about multinational companies of the European Union. The partners of these trainings are the Departments for International Cooperation of the the Academy of Hotel Management of Catering Industry in Poznan (Poland), the University of South Bohemia (Czech Republic), the University of Linz (Austria).
